Wikia - creating communities

[edit] Welcome

Welcome, Avatar, to the Central Wikia!

We are a friendly community here; most of us are active on an individual Wikia, and many of us are active on more than one.

If you're looking for help, use the Community Portal or Help Desk. If your wiki needs something done, leave the details on the Volunteer Portal. If you need assistance from a member of staff, leave a message with one of the Community Team.

You can get live help from community members and staff in our IRC channel. There are also channels for larger Wikia and their communities. Here you can socialise and get to know your community!

If you have an idea for a new Wikia, please let us know! Check out new wikis and see if any of them interest you. A directory of existing wikis is also available.

Finally, please keep an eye on the recent changes to see what the community is up to and to help reverse spam and vandalism.

Enjoy! Tomsen (talk) 13:51, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Can you guys handle #wikia-de for a little while?

Avatar and Tomsen (copied to both pages), I've really got a ton of work to do on w:WikiProject Robotics. Can you two keep an eye on #wikia-de for me while I'm gone? - Dan Dank55 15:26, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Of course, thanks for your help. Hope you'll be back soon with more time :-). Good luck with the project. --Avatar@Wikia 16:23, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Musik-Wiki

--Avatar@Wikia 10:10, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Vielen Dank --Judithhh 11:30, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] About he finnish Harry Potter Wiki

We are decited that new name is Potterwiki.

Thanks, if you are read this message to end. :) --Jouman206 (Jotain asiaa?) 15:21, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] My name @ Wikia...

Hi, I like your work on Wikia very much, but I've one thing to complain: I don't like the following page to be found on google by searching my name: http://search.wikia.com/wiki/User_talk:German_Fordinal

Is it possible to disable this funktion? Like not being searched by google or sth like that??

Would be nice, Thx a lot!

Sad but true I don't think there is a possibility right now to exclude a user talk page from the Google search index. But I'll talk to our tech people and will find out if they have an idea. --Avatar@Wikia 04:19, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] #wikia-promotion

How do I promote a wiki using this IRC channel? I feel like the instructions ChanServ gives don't really help, and I want to know what I am doing wrong. Thank you! Glacier Wolf 19:36, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Question answered in the IRC-Channel a few minutes ago =) Tomsen (talk) 19:57, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Deutsches Club Penguin-Wiki

Geht schon.--KleinerNick 14:11, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "Good article" discussion on en.WP

Hi Tim. I haven't been around the #wikia-de channel much because we didn't have many "customers"; if you start to get people needing help when you aren't around, please let me know and I'll come back to help.

I'm actually here about something else. I understand you're an admin at de.WP. We're having a big (and important, I think) discussion about whether to start putting the "Good Article" symbol at the top of Good Articles in mainspace on en.WP. It's been pointed out that the Spanish and Chinese WP's do this. I posted this at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:GA:

You can see an example of a German "Lesenswerte" ("worthy of reading") page at [2]. Their equivalent of WP:GA begins: "Die folgenden Artikel sind fachlich korrekt, belegt, ausführlich und informativ. Correct me if I'm wrong, someone, but I translate this as: "The following articles are correct with respect to their subject, (well) sourced, extensive and informative. For these reasons, they are denoted by Image:Qsicon lesenswert.png." If anyone wants to know, I know one of the German admins and I'll ask him if any of the problems brought up by the opposition below have been in evidence on the German Wikipedia.

They do want to know :) What's your opinion, has the "L" symbol on de.WP caused people to believe things about the quality of the articles that was not true? Could you post your opinion somewhere on that page, please, either in a new section or under my comment? If you'd rather answer here, that's fine too. Thanks for your time. - Dan talk on en.WP

Sorry, that I was ignoring this message for so long. Catching up with Wikipedia discussions is very time consuming and I wasn't able to find enough ease to deal with it. All in all I can say that the community (it's hard to measure the impact outside of the community) is happy with having "Lesenswerte" article besides the "Exzellente Artikel". The requirements of "Exzellente Artikel" are very high (and so there are not too many), but there are many "good" articles out there which are definitly worth reading. This was the birth of the "Lesenswerte Artikel". At the beginning, there were objections against the idea (including me) because of the fear that the quality standards will lower. This hasn't happened - contrary: the requirements for "Lesenswerte Artikel" were raised. Both, the "lesenswerte" and the "exzellente" symbols are today perceived as an indication of quality. --Avatar@Wikia 04:47, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Bullpedia

--Avatar@Wikia 07:19, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Ich habe dich im ICQ einmal hinzugefügt. Item(TALK) 09:24, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Could you please look at this issue? Thank you! {{SUBST:User:Bucurestean/HT2}} 19:57, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

I have answered myself on Angela's talk page and I would appreciate it if this issues was being discussed on one sole page. Thanks, Dimitri N. WS/WN 17:55, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
Please see User talk:Sannse#Wikistad for a reply from staff. Thanks -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 16:17, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Help pages

Well, I don't completely understand the issue. It just sounds like you are talking about moving to a dedicated German help wiki and using interlanguage links and a redirect from a de.help to the German word for help.

Though I do have an interesting possibility. The id used in the parser cache can actually be modified by extensions. So actually, it's functionally possible to have different content depending on the content language. Basically with an extension it should be possible to have langcode.help.wikia.com setup so that the langcode will alter the content language variable (Actually my dev site uses the langcode trick for testing). It should also be possible to make use of an extension to make it so that when you visit XYZ on ....help.wikia.com if XYZ/langcode exists then the content of XYZ/langcode will replace the content of XYZ using the ParserBeforeStrip hook, and also include the lang code inside of the parser cache's id.

Functionally that will mean that help.wikia.com can contain help in every language. Changing the code to go to de.help.wikia.com, ja.help.wikia.com, etc... Will change the content language of the help wiki. And if there are localized versions of a help page then they will be displayed there instead of the English help. (You can also fake a language sidebar that'll link people to any language they want) ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) (tricks) (current topic) Jul 30, 2008 @ 07:55 (UTC)

Yes, dealing with multiple languages probably does get a bit complex, especially when you want titles to work correctly to.
Though if you did go the extension method. It may actually be possible to #ALIAS titles together. Perhaps some sort of map that maps titles in other languages to the English page. The extension would smartly handle redirects to point people at the title according to what language they are viewing in. There is also a hook for modifying action tabs (Point the edit tab to the edit page for the localized version of the page). ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) (tricks) (current topic) Jul 30, 2008 @ 08:16 (UTC)

(I'm working with Norwegian translations at Norsk Wikia)

[edit] RE: Template Changes

It appears wrong on w:c:FunOrb:Avatar, and several other dark sites... but I'm not sure why it's not working right... --Bigd56 | Talk 19:11, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

I got it to work... made another slight template update, and null edited your user page... It now appears as it should. All dark skinned wikis may also require your user page to be null edited, but it still looks fine on regular themed wikis... --Bigd56 | Talk 19:21, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Vorlage Dateiinfo

Hallo Tim,
